A Guide to Banner Fabric Materials: Options and Benefits

The material you get a banner made from has some impact on how it looks to your audience, but it also has a major impact on the price, durability, and optimal placement of the banner.

There are three main banner fabric materials you can get display banners made with, and we will highlight the pros and cons of each one.

1: Polyester Blend Fabric

Fabric banners are most often made with polyester and similar canvas materials, and the design is printed onto the fabric. These are best used in indoor environments, and they’re extremely popular in all types of applications.

These are cost-effective, lightweight for easy transport, and when placed appropriately, they can be extremely visible and colorful.

The drawbacks of fabric are that it’s not optimal for outdoor displays, and you have to be careful where you place your banner in an indoor space. If you place it right in front of a light or window, the banner will look semi-transparent and difficult to view. This isn’t a big problem on a tradeshow floor, but you still need to pay attention to where you’re placing your banner.

In outdoor settings, they’re more prone to ripping or fading due to the elements, but they’re generally very durable banners.

2: Vinyl Banners

Vinyl banners are, as the name suggests, made of vinyl. Being made from a polymer comes with a lot of benefits.

First, a vinyl banner is completely opaque whether there’s a light source behind it or not. So, you don’t have to consider lighting as much. They can also be printed with more intense colors to create stunningly clear visual effects.

Then, they’re extremely durable. They can stand up to abuse during indoor events if that’s a problem, storage if you plan to use the banner for years to come, and yes, even outdoor exposure to the elements. Vinyl banners are UV-resistant, wind-resistant, and abrasion-resistant.

The downsides are the price and weight of vinyl. Vinyl banners cost a bit more than similarly sized fabric banners. It’s not a massive price increase, and you get your money’s worth, but it is something to consider. They are also considerably heavier. With bigger banners, you might need multiple people to position one.

3: Mesh Banners

Mesh banners aren’t as common, and they’re semi-transparent due to their design. Even more so than fabric banners. However, they do serve a purpose.

Mesh banners are best used in outdoor spaces because they’re not affected by the wind. Though these typically aren’t used at trade shows or events that are planned around optimal weather.

Color and visual sharpness are also greatly reduced with mesh designs, but at a distance, they still serve their purpose. This is more of a niche banner material.
